The Essentials on How to Build a Wind Turbine

By Dominique Nichels

Article recommended by Rabbi Yitzhak Miller

How to build a wind turbine. Why would you want to build one? Well, when it is laid out in black and white, there are two major factors that dominate the reasoning to do so. One is saving money and the other is saving the planet. Both are good reasons, and made even better by the fact that they can go hand in hand.

A windmill, based on the ones that have been developed for harnessing the power of the wind, the ones which stand in off shore farms and upon large exposed areas of land like in the Midwest of the US, can provide power for your home without having to rely on expensive services provided by utility companies.

It is feasible and it is not an expensive task to undertake. To build a wind turbine of your own, there are few basic components one would need and, of course, some sort of simple and straightforward plan or guideline to follow for construction purposes.

Essentially, broken down, you will be constructing four main elements. A base needs to be sturdy so that when the windmill is built upon it, it’s not to be in danger of blowing away. Remember that the windmill is going to need as much wind as it can get, therefore is likely to be in an exposed area. A sturdy base is the foundation of a good windmill.

Choice of materials for the tower itself will be up to you, but good wood will mostly likely endure. The blades themselves need to be a good, lightweight yet strong material. They have to be strong enough to take the brunt of the much needed wind, but light enough to turn efficiently, especially under gentle breezes.

The inner components of your DIY windmill, such as the gearbox and electrical conduits and converters for transferring mechanical energy into electrical current, will need to be followed closely in any plans. All the components you need are readily available in good hardware stores and there’s nothing too expensive that makes the project impracticable.

Knowing how to build a wind turbine is knowing how to save yourself money. It’s knowing that you’ll be making an environmental difference. Whatever the outlay in material is, you will more than reap back what you have sown when those electric bills start falling and falling.
